Search Engine Optimisation

Why all the hype about Search Engine Optimisation and what is it?

Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is a framework of steps you can take to make your website more visible to search engines. The framework covers: technical issues like structure, file naming conventions, navigation, links, through to the creative aspect of copywriting and presentation standards. All these and much more have an effect on the visibility and traffic volume that visit your site.

SEO is concerned with the Organic or Natural or Free results that appear when a user types in a search query into a Search Engine. The pages that are displayed are called the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP's). Being buried on page 15 which is unlikely to been seen is not good compared to being on the first page.

International research has shown that if you're not on any of the first 3 pages you will miss 8 out of 10 searchers. Approx 60% only look at the first page. This is also why there are huge traffic gains to be made by improving your organic search position. 200% to 500% increase in traffic is not uncommon.

It is not enough to be just indexed by search engines, when 6 out of 10 people will only look at the first page. If they can't find what they're looking for they will try another search term.

There are three main sources of traffic:

  • Visitor arrives directly because they know your site or possibly a word of mouth referral.
  • Visitor arrives via another site which could be a directory site or themed site that links to your site.
  • Visitor arrives via a search engine via Free search or pay per click advertisement like Google Adwords.

Search Engine Optimisation influences all three sources. That is why SEO is so important.
