Off Page SEO Techniques - Building Effective Links
Useful Guidelines For Backlinks
Why Are Links So Important
When referring to ‘links’ we are generally meaning ‘backlinks’ or ‘Inbound links’. These are the links from other sites to your site. Links are how you are able to surf the web, following links from one site to another.
Google PageRank
Googles PageRank algorithm is what drives the focus on ‘Link Building’ activity.
PageRank relies on the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Hence the term “backlinking” which is so important to a good Google rank. Google also analyses the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."
One-way inbound links count twice as heavy as 2-way (reciprocal) links. The PageRank inherited by a site is lower than the PageRank of the originating site.
To increase your "link popularity", try to obtain links from site pages, which have a good PageRank (i.e. a good popularity). While Google keep the detail of the proprietary algorithm secret the word is that it measures approximately 100 factors to determine a web pages PageRank. One thing is certain and that is that is works and works brilliantly displaying consistent relevant results.

Useful Guidelines For Backlinks
The next step major in the process of boosting your PageRank relates to the “off page” activity which is the source of much confusion, frustration, and consternation for web owners. The “on page” tasks are about what’s on your pages and is manageable and well within your control. However, the off page process, which can bring excellent gains, is more about capitalising on and building relationships within your existing network and related industry niche.
The off page elements are about links from other sites to your web site. The quality and relevance of those links is an easy way for a computer program, like Google, to access its importance and trustworthiness. With quality links improving your PageRank an increase in traffic is certain to follow.
When thinking about link building there are 4 components:
- Link Quantity – referring to the number of links
- Link Quality – much more important is the quality eg, PageRank of linking site, age of site, authority etc.
- Anchor Text – refers to the text that links to your site
- Relevancy – refers to the linking sites relevance to your site.
Below is a list of tips and hints for backlinks:
- Asking for reciprocal links is a good idea.
- When asking for links say “no click here” links, instead use, something like this: “Visit this site for ‘your keywords”.
- A link from an ordinary page is more valuable than a links page.
- Scatter links around your site.
- Avoid having a large number of links on one page. If you must then -
- Avoid calling it a “Links Page” try “Resource Page” instead.
Who Can Link To Your Site
While the list below is not an exhaustive list it will give you some idea on possible options:
- Search Directories - both international and local
- Local Business Directories - Yellow Pages, searchnz, nzsearch, finda, hotfrog, nzdirectory
- Industry Associations - that you belong to or are relevant to your business
- Suppliers - ask your suppliers or upstream manufacturers to link to your site
- Customer Businesses – ask your customers for a link
- Investigate Competitors – find out who is linking to them and ask for a link also
- Employees – if they have a blog or are active with social networking
Other options worth considering include the social media technologies: social networking, microblogging, blogging, social bookmarking, forums, interest communities, and video clips.
As you can see from the information above it can be quite a challenge to undertake this process. We can help manage it for you.
Site Submission
Instead of waiting for Google, Yahoo and the other search engines to find your site by crawling the links. You can submit your site manually to a search engines index. The big advantage of this is that you do not have to wait until their searchbot finds your site.
